Venus Retrograde 2026: Love, Money, Power and a Major Reassessment

The week of October 2 opens one of the most important astrological periods of the fall. Venus stations retrograde on October 3 at 8° Scorpio and remains retrograde until November 13, when it stations direct at 22°51′ Libra.

Venus retrograde occurs only about once every 19 months, making it considerably less common than Mercury retrograde. It asks us to stop and reconsider the things Venus governs: relationships, attraction, love, money, possessions, pleasure, beauty, creativity, values and self-worth. But this particular Venus retrograde has an additional intensity. On the very day Venus turns retrograde, Mars at 3°06′ Leo makes an exact opposition to Pluto at 3°06′ Aquarius. Mercury is also entering its pre-retrograde shadow and will turn retrograde later in October, creating a period in which relationships and values, communication and decisions, and questions of power and control become intertwined.

This is not a quiet Venus retrograde.

Why Retrograde Venus Feels So Personal

Astronomically, planets are closest to Earth during the retrograde portion of their cycles. Astrologically, this has traditionally contributed to the sense that their symbolism becomes more immediate and personal. Venus retrogrades approximately every 19 months, but there is also a remarkable eight-year pattern. After eight years, Venus returns to retrograde in approximately the same area of the zodiac. The current series takes us backward through 2026 – 2018 – 2010 – 2002 – 1994 – 1986 – 1978 – 1970 – 1962 – 1954 – 1946. Think back particularly to October and November 2018. What was happening in your relationships? What were you learning about money, attraction, self-worth or your priorities? What changed regarding what or whom you valued? The circumstances will not necessarily repeat, but the underlying Venus themes may rhyme.

There is an even deeper way of understanding the Venus cycle. Like the Moon, Venus has a phase relationship with the Sun. The inferior conjunction occurs when retrograde Venus passes between Earth and the Sun. It is analogous to a New Moon and begins a new approximately 584-day Venus synodic cycle. The superior conjunction occurs when Venus is on the far side of the Sun. It is approximately analogous to the Full Moon phase of the Venus cycle. This becomes particularly important during the 2026 retrograde because we will actually witness the symbolic death and rebirth of Venus within the cycle and the beginning of a new synodic cycle, from the same series as 2018 Venus cycle and back each 8 years.

What Does Venus Retrograde Mean?

Venus retrograde is best understood as a period of review, reassessment and reorientation. It does not mean that everything involving Venus will go wrong, although some things may go very wrong (I am reflecting on one especially unlucky experiment with my hair just a couple of days before Venus turning retrograde, the one that took many months to correct...). More often though, we would discover that our previous judgments about values (financial, emotional or personal) need reconsideration. Relationships can return for review. Old relationship issues may resurface, and people from the past sometimes reappear. Existing relationships may require us to reconsider what we need and what we are prepared to give. Love and attraction can become complicated. Feelings may change, an old attraction may return, or we may suddenly question something we previously thought we wanted. Values become central. One of the most useful Venus-retrograde questions is how genuine are our desires and whether we just follow the expectations and trends. Money and possessions also come under review. Spending, pricing, investments, financial priorities and our assessment of what something is worth may need another look. For that reason, I generally recommend caution with major financial decisions during Venus retrograde. When possible, this is a better period for reviewing and renegotiating than for making irreversible financial commitments, moving large amounts of money, or making expensive purchases primarily because we are convinced that we absolutely must have something right now. The same caution applies to beauty and appearance. Our tastes can change during Venus retrograde. Major cosmetic procedures, dramatic changes in appearance or expensive redesigns deserve extra consideration - not because they are destined to fail, but because what looks irresistible during the retrograde may not look quite as appealing afterward.

On the positive side, Venus retrograde can be wonderful for creative revision. Return to the painting, manuscript, music, design or creative idea that was never completed. Something abandoned may contain value that you couldn't recognize the first time.

Venus Descends Into the Underworld

There is a beautiful astronomical story behind Venus retrograde. Venus begins this process as an Evening Star showing in the sky after the sunset and gradually disappearing into the Sun's light. Several days before the inferior conjunction, Venus meets the Sun and becomes invisible. Afterward, Venus eventually emerges on the other side of the Sun as the Morning Star visible just before the sunrise. Symbolically, the sequence looks like this: Evening Star → disappearance → underworld → inferior conjunction → rebirth → Morning Star. This ancient rhythm is one reason Venus retrograde is much richer than the popular shorthand of “an ex comes back.” Something is being stripped down to its essential value.

Scorpio First: What Lies Underneath?

From October 3 through October 24, Venus retrogrades through Scorpio. Scorpio doesn't particularly care about appearances. It wants to know what lies underneath them. This first portion of the retrograde therefore asks uncomfortable but valuable questions: What am I attached to? What am I afraid of losing? What do I share, and what do I keep for myself? What do I owe—and what is owed to me? Where have love, sex, money or emotional dependency become entangled with power and control? Issues involving intimacy, trust, sexuality, shared resources, debts, jealousy and emotional entanglements may therefore become part of the Venus review. And this time Venus does not enter that territory alone.

October 3: Mars Opposite Pluto

The opening of this retrograde is exceptionally forceful. On October 3, the same day Venus stations retrograde, Mars at 3°06′ Leo exactly opposes Pluto at 3°06′ Aquarius. We encountered this Mars–Pluto story previously while Mars was still in Cancer and the aspect was out of sign. Now Mars has entered Leo, and the opposition becomes a full fixed-sign confrontation. Mars in Leo wants to act, assert, create, lead and defend individual will. Pluto at the beginning of Aquarius describes pressure, power, compulsion, exposure and transformation coming through groups, systems, friendships, organizations, ideology, technology and collective forces. An opposition tends to externalize the conflict: one side pushes, and the other pushes back. That makes this much more than a gentle “reconsider love and money” Venus retrograde. Themes involving desire versus control, attraction and power, sexual dynamics, jealousy, financial leverage, autonomy, fear, attachment and who has the upper hand can accompany the beginning of the cycle. Watch attempts to force an outcome. Mars–Pluto can create tremendous determination, but it can also turn determination into compulsion. For the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius), particularly those with placements in the early degrees, the Mars–Pluto opposition is especially impactful.

Mercury Joins the Story

Mercury enters its retrograde shadow on October 4 and eventually stations retrograde on October 24 at approximately 21° Scorpio. It will backtrack through Scorpio before stationing direct on November 13 near 5° Scorpio. That creates an unusual overlap.Venus asks: What do I value? Mercury asks: What do I actually know, and what needs to be reconsidered? And remember, it all started with Mars and Pluto asking: Where is the power?

During this period, listen carefully and double-check important conversations, agreements and assumptions. Scorpio communication can contain layers. What is being said may not necessarily be the whole story. Motivations can be complicated, and information that was unavailable earlier may emerge later. This doesn't mean assuming that everyone has a hidden agenda. It means allowing room for the possibility that there is more to the story than we currently know.

October 23–24: The Rebirth of Venus

Just before Mercury goes retrograde, late on October 23 into October 24, Venus reaches its inferior conjunction with the Sun near 0° Scorpio and starts its new synodic cycle. This is the Venus Cazimi (Venus is in the heart of the Sun, with Sun illuminating her and two becoming one) and symbolically the rebirth point of the Venus cycle. The Evening Star has disappeared. The old Venus cycle reaches its conclusion, and a new one begins. This is an important turning point. We may not yet have external answers, but internally something can become much clearer.

What matters now? What is worth keeping? What has lost its value? What have we learned about desire, intimacy, money or relationships that we cannot unlearn? Mercury turns retrograde at essentially the same stage of the story, ensuring that the answers aren't rushed. We have discovered something, but we still need time to understand it.

October 25: Venus Returns to Libra

On October 25, shortly after the new cycle begins, Venus retrogrades from Scorpio back into Libra, and the tone changes. Scorpio asks: What is really going on underneath this relationship? Libra asks: Given what I now know, is this relationship fair? Scorpio exposes attachment, vulnerability, intimacy and power. Libra considers reciprocity, equality, compromise, agreement and balance. This is where the Venus retrograde begins moving from psychological excavation toward renegotiation. Can the relationship be rebalanced? Can an agreement be made fairer? Can financial arrangements be reconsidered? Can two people want different things without one person having to dominate the other? The movement from Scorpio back to Libra suggests that we cannot create genuine harmony simply by avoiding what is uncomfortable. First, we uncover the truth; then we negotiate the balance.

November 13: Both Venus and Mercury Turn Direct

November 13 is one of the most interesting days of the entire cycle. Mercury stations direct near 5° Scorpio in the morning, and Venus stations direct at 22°51′ Libra later that day. Within hours, both planets change direction. Symbolically, mind and values begin moving forward together. Mercury in Scorpio says: Now I understand what was underneath it. Venus in Libra answers: Now I can decide what is fair, valuable and worth continuing. And there is another beautiful feature of the Venus station: Venus turns direct within roughly a degree and a half of Spica, one of the most fortunate fixed stars in traditional astrology. Spica has long been associated with protection, talent, opportunity and benefit. Its presence does not erase whatever occurred during the retrograde, but it gives the station a striking symbolism of preservation, talent, benefit and recovery after reassessment. Something worth saving may be saved. Something whose value was overlooked may be recognized. A creative ability may reemerge. A relationship may find a different equilibrium. A financial or personal decision may finally make more sense.

Another Powerful Activation on November 13

There is still another layer to November 13. Mars and Jupiter are together in Leo near the South Node, around 24°–25° Leo. This occurs between the degrees of the two recent eclipses—the August 12 eclipse around 20° Leo and the February 17 eclipse around 28° Aquarius. That places the November turnaround back into the larger Leo/Aquarius story already emphasized by the Mars–Pluto opposition at the beginning of Venus retrograde. The first half of Scorpio (and other three fixed signs) is therefore under considerable pressure throughout this period, and people with significant placements in the early fixed signs should pay particular attention to what develops.

The Five Dates to Watch

The entire story can be understood through five turning points:

October 3: Confrontation and revelation. Venus stations retrograde as Mars exactly opposes Pluto.

October 23–24: Rebirth and reconsideration. Venus reaches the Sun at the inferior conjunction (Cazimi) while Mercury begins its retrograde motion. New cycle has started, some clarity has been obtained. and plans need reconsideration and renewed discussion.

October 25: The story changes signs. Venus leaves Scorpio and returns to Libra, shifting the emphasis from exposure and intimacy toward fairness and relationship balance.

November 13: Going forward. Mercury and Venus both station direct, with Venus close to Spica, assuring that peace, fairness and balance will be found.

However, the retrograde period is officially over only after December 15, when Venus finally leaves its post-retrograde shadow, completing the territory it began reviewing in early October. November 13 is therefore a turning point rather than an instant conclusion. Once planets station direct, they still need time to retrace the territory of the retrograde and pickup their normal speed, as retrograde planets and planets in the pre- and post-retrograde shadows move slower than usually, which impedes their normal function.

How to Read Your Sun-Sign Forecast

For the forecasts below, I am using whole-sign houses from your Sun sign or, if you know your Ascendant sign, use it instead or in combination with the Sun sign: astrology works on many complementary levels, and reading them separately or combining two or more levels gives you a correct picture. There are three interconnected stories to watch.

Venus shows what is being reevaluated. Mercury shows where thinking, conversations, information and decisions must be revisited. The Mars–Pluto opposition identifies the conflict or pressure point that may force the Venus issue into consciousness.

Read your Sun/Ascendant sign below to see which houses are activated and where this unusual Venus retrograde is most likely to ask you to reconsider what you desire, what you value, what you are willing to negotiate and what is no longer worth the price.

Aries: Venus Rx reopens questions about intimacy, trust, sexuality, debts, shared finances and dependency, before diving into the issues of relationships and contracts. Venus retrogradation starts with tension between personal desires, romance, children or creative expression and friends, groups or collective expectations: a romantic situation could clash with friendships or future plans. Mercury Rx will bring difficult or previously unfinished conversations about trust and shared resources that Venus is questioning and reconsidering. Ultimately, this Venus/Mercury retrograde is about deciding what kind of partnership is fair.

Taurus: Venus makes relationships and agreements the subject of review, before returning to the 6th house of work, health and daily responsibilities. In the beginning of the Venus Rx, the background tension comes from Mars opposing Pluto and stressing home and family demands versus career, authority and public responsibilities. A relationship may be caught in the middle. Mercury Rx in the 7th house of relationships and partners means conversations and agreements with partners may need to be reopened. Eventually the question becomes very practical and the decision must be made on whether the relationship or arrangement actually work in everyday life.

Gemini: Venus reconsiders work, routines, obligations and the balance between service and pleasure. Mars and Pluto can produce strongly held opinions, contentious conversations, or conflicts involving education, travel or beliefs. After October 24th, when Mercury will retrograde in the 6th house, work arrangements and schedules will deserve particular attention. Venus asks a deceptively simple question on how to bring joy, fun, and creativity into everyday life.

Cancer: Venus begins Rx highlighting romance, children, creativity and pleasure, then turns to home and family. Her question is how these two areas of life can be restructured and rearranged to balance fun and creative projects with the family life. The Mars–Pluto opposition falls across the financial axis: my money versus our money, personal security versus shared resources, possessions versus debts or obligations. This can bring money matters into consideration of the fun – family balance and also expose questions of self-worth, dependency and sexual power. Mercury Rx can resurrect old romantic conversations or creative projects. What initially appears to be about romance may ultimately reveal deeper questions about security and financial means.

Leo: This is one of the signs most directly affected by the opening configuration: Mars is in Leo's 1st house opposing Pluto in the 7th. The axis is literally self vs another person: assertion, anger and independence versus a partner, opponent or powerful other person. Power struggles can become difficult to ignore. Venus Rx and later Mercury Rx begin uncovering family history, home issues and emotional patterns before turning to reconsidering communications. The way through the Mars - Pluto confrontation may involve understanding where present relationship conflicts reproduce much older emotional and family patterns and then finding a different way to communicate with a partner.

Virgo: Venus begins by reviewing communications, contracts, and siblings. Mercury later makes this an especially significant period for revising what has been said, written or agreed upon. Venus eventually enters the house of money, values and self-worth. Meanwhile Mars and Pluto highlight hidden exhaustion, suppressed frustration or unconscious behavior versus work, health and relentless obligations. Venus Rx may start with realization that something happening behind the scenes that may be undermining everyday functioning. The goal during this Venus retrograde ultimately is deciding on what your time, energy and work actually worth and what level of effort is appropriate to communicate your values.

Libra: Because Venus rules Libra and part of the retrograde motion is in Libra, this retrograde becomes particularly personal. Venus initially reviews money, possessions, priorities and self-worth, then backs into the 1st house, turning the reassessment toward identity, appearance and personal desires. These reflections and adjustments are prompted by Mars and Pluto creating tension between groups, friendships and collective goals versus romance, creativity and individual self-expression in the beginning of the retrograde motion. You may discover that what a group expects and what personally brings you pleasure are no longer compatible and does not reflect your priorities. Mercury Rx intensifies the financial and values review. Ultimately, after the reassessment and adjustments, a recovery of what is personally valuable is possible.

Scorpio: Venus stations retrograde in Scorpio's 1st house of self, making questions of attraction, relationships, values and identity deeply personal. Mercury will also retrograde in the 1st. But Mars in the 10th opposing Pluto in the 4th creates another powerful axis: career and public responsibilities versus home, family, ancestry and private life. Ambition may collide with deeply rooted emotional or family realities. Venus then retreats into Libra in the 12th house of hidden things and behind-the-scenes, taking the process inward. Old attachments, private relationships, grief or unconscious relationship patterns may emerge. The retrograde points to the hidden patterns that have been determining what you want, and the reflection may start with observing your family patterns and your public life.

Sagittarius: Venus begins her retrograde motion in the private 12th house, resurfacing old feelings, hidden attachments and unfinished emotional issues or past grief before returning to the 11th house of friends, organizations and goals. Mars in the 9th opposes Pluto in the 3rd, potentially intensifying conflicts around beliefs, education, religion, politics, publishing or teaching versus information, communication and everyday thinking. There can be a temptation to prove that one's worldview is correct rather than listen and observe. Mercury Rx in the 12th makes reflection especially important. Venus eventually asks. Venus suggests to retreat to a place of solitude and reflect on who belongs in your future, who are your friends and foes and what are your self-undoing habits that prevent you from reaching your life goals.

Capricorn: Venus starts in the 11th house, reassessing friendships, organizations, professional networks and long-term aspirations, before returning to the 10th house of career and reputation. But the Mars–Pluto opposition activates the 8th/2nd financial axis. Mars in the 8th can intensify issues involving shared money, debts, taxes, investments, intimacy or dependency, while Pluto in the 2nd is already transforming your relationship with personal resources and value. The financial value of your career or job may be under reconsideration. Mercury Rx in the 11th may bring former contacts or plans back for another look. Venus ultimately stations direct in the career house near fixed star Spica, making professional value, recognition and alliances especially significant while examining how organizations and professional networks contribute to your success.

Aquarius: Aquarius is the other sign sitting directly on the Mars–Pluto axis: Pluto is in the 1st house and Mars is in the 7th. Relationships, competitors or confrontational people may force Aquarius to confront profound changes already occurring within the self. The danger is turning differences into contests of will and power. Venus retrogrades through the 10th house of career, status and reputation, before returning to the 9th house of beliefs, education, publishing, travel and meaning. Mercury Rx in the 10th also reopens professional decisions and conversations. Aquarians will be considering whether the public life and career they are building still reflect who they are and where they are going at the personal level and whether what they are doing in the world still aligns with their beliefs.

Pisces: Venus starts retrograde in the 9th, reviewing beliefs, education and the larger meaning attached to life choices. It then returns to the 8th house, where those ideas meet the realities of intimacy, trust, shared money and dependency. Mercury Rx in the 9th encourages reconsideration of assumptions and beliefs. Venus ultimately asks whether what you intellectually believe about relationships and values actually works when trust, vulnerability and shared resources enter the picture. Meanwhile Mars in the 6th opposes Pluto in the 12th: work, responsibilities, routines and physical expenditure of energy confront hidden psychological pressures, suppressed anger or circumstances operating behind the scenes.
